Can I take this item on a plane?

You are allowed aerosols for medical treatment, and those applied to hair or skin such as deodorant, insect repellent, shaving cream, and hairspray in either your carry-on or check-in bag.

IMPORTANT: There are different restrictions for domestic and international flights. Please follow the size and quantity restrictions before you travel.

Other aerosols

  • All other flammable aerosols are banned.
  • Other non-flammable aerosols may go in your check-in bag.

What are the restrictions?

Domestic flights

  • Each container must not exceed 500 ml (or 500 g)
  • The total volume of all aerosols per passenger must not exceed 2000 ml (or 2000 g)
  • Each container must have a suitable means to prevent accidental activation of the release valve e.g. lid.

International flights

  • Carry on bags – items must not exceed 100 ml. Many aerosol containers are bigger than 100 ml – check before you pack.
  • Checked-in bags – each container must not exceed 500 ml [or 500g];
  • The total volume of all aerosols per passenger must not exceed 2000 ml [or 2000g]
  • Each container must have its own lid to prevent accidental activation

Why is this item restricted?

There are risks with some types of aerosol exploding or catching fire harming people and property. It’s not safe to take them on the plane.

What happens if I have a restricted item in my carry-on bag?

You will be asked to relinquish all dangerous or prohibited items found in your carry-on luggage. If you refuse:

  • you will not be permitted to move through the screening point, and
  • your airline will be advised of your refusal.

How does Aviation Security screen for restricted items?

AvSec x-ray bags going onto aircraft to ensure there is nothing dangerous in them. If something comes up on the x-ray that needs checking, the bag will be opened, searched and any dangerous good or prohibited item will be removed, with a bag search notification form left within the bag.

What if my items are removed?

If you want to retrieve an item that has been removed, please contact your airline as soon as possible. The airline will dispose of items within three to seven days, so the sooner you make contact, the better your chance of having the items returned to you. For more information, see:
