Applicability:

Slick 4200, 4300 and 4700 series magnetos listed in Slick SB1-15 dated 7 February 2015.

Purpose:

This Continuing Airworthiness Notice (CAN) is issued to advise operators and maintainers that Champion Aerospace has issued Slick SB1-15 dated 7 February 2015 to introduce a new replacement K3008 distributor gear assembly with an improved electrode finger retention.

Background:

This CAN is prompted by the CAA and Champion Aerospace receiving numerous reports of finding loose electrode fingers in certain Slick magneto distributor gears which resulted in an unusual RPM drop during magneto checks, or difficult engine starts, or a rough running engine, and in certain instances, a loss of engine power.

A review of reports and failed parts received by Champion Aerospace found certain distributor gear assemblies fitted to 4 cylinder magnetos with a loose electrode finger.

To address this safety concern, Champion Aerospace subsequently issued Slick SB1-15 to introduce a replacement K3008 distributor gear assembly with an improved electrode finger retention.

Recommendation:

The CAA strongly recommends compliance with the requirements specified in Slick SB1-15 at the next aircraft maintenance inspection.
