We're running dangerous goods (DG) courses throughout New Zealand to provide training and qualification for the carriage of DG.

The three day course is targeted particularly at Part 135 and 137 operators who carry DG as part of their normal business, and is applicable to all personnel involved in the handing of DG.

Private pilots and other commercial operators also require DG training and should consider attending.

CAA is planning four dangerous goods training courses concentrated in the main centres in 2025:

  • Auckland 20-22 May
  • Queenstown 17-19 June
  • Wellington 12-14 August
  • Christchurch 28-30 October

The dangerous goods course is now three days, changed and restructured from the 2-day course that ran throughout 2023 and 2024. These changes have been made based on participant feedback.

  • Day one covers basic knowledge and dangerous goods carried by passengers.  All participants must attend day one, and for persons who only work in a will-not-carry operation it is only required to attend day one.
  • Day two covers aspects of dangerous goods applicable to persons who work in a will-carry operation who have a role in handling or managing dangerous goods cargo.  All staff who work in a will-carry operation need to attend days one and day two.
  • Day three covers the knowledge and skills needed for a person who acts as a shipper and/or acceptance person in a will-carry operation.  It builds on the knowledge gained during day one and two.  Staff who will be carrying out dangerous goods shipping and/or dangerous goods acceptance need to attend days one, two, and three.

Each day will include a knowledge examination, and practical assessments of competency based on the content of that day’s lessons.  It is necessary to pass both the examination and the competency assessments on that day to gain the qualification: due to time and resource constraints it is not possible to conduct retraining and retesting.

The dangerous goods course is aimed specifically at Part 135 operators, but is applicable to other operations carried out under Parts 91, 115, 125, 137, 141, etc.  The qualification gained enables a person to manage and handle dangerous goods within their own organisation: it is not a qualification that allows a person to act as a dangerous goods shipper or acceptance person for other organisations.
