The prestigious Civil Aviation Authority Director’s Award for 2024 has been awarded to Brad MacLachlan for his commitment to maintaining and improving aviation safety.
This award, announced at the annual Aviation Industry Association conference Gala dinner on 28 August and presented by Director of Civil Aviation, Keith Manch, recognises MacLachlan’s commitment to aviation safety by designing an award-winning system that should save lives in helicopters.
The CAA is proud to honour an individual who exemplifies the dedication needed to uphold New Zealand’s aviation industry safety standards and ensure the continued success of the industry.
MacLachlan’s journey in aviation is one of resilience and dedication. Almost a decade ago, as a young commercial pilot on the West Coast of the South Island, he was involved in a serious helicopter accident that changed his life, leaving him in a wheelchair. However, this setback did not end his aviation career.
MacLachlan continued to work in an administrative role for Fox Franz Heli Services, where he became the Senior Person Responsible for Occurrence Investigator on their Air Operator Certificate (AOC) in 2017 and later took on the role of Safety Manager. He now serves as the Safety Manager for The Helicopter Line, where his contributions have had a lasting impact on aviation safety.
Among his notable achievements are the development of two safety products for helicopters: the Positive Latch System for all MD 369 variations and Rear Seat Gear Restraints.
Brad’s current boss describes him as “tenacious and a stickler for safety,” someone who challenges everyone to do things correctly and safely. His deep understanding of both the flying and operational sides of the business allows him to integrate safety into every aspect of his work.
The CAA Director’s Award celebrates individuals like Brad MacLachlan, who embody the values of safety, innovation, and resilience. His story serves as an inspiration to the entire aviation community, demonstrating that a commitment to safety is not just a professional duty but a personal mission.
