As of 4 March 2024, national office staff from the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAA) and the Aviation Security Service (AvSec) have returned to their permanent workspace on level 15 and part of level 14 of the Asteron Centre in Wellington. This move follows two years of significant seismic upgrades undertaken and funded by the building owner.

In July 2021, all occupants in the Asteron Centre vacated due to engineering reports identifying the need for substantial seismic strengthening work. Between 2021 and 2023, the necessary upgrades were completed by the building owner to bring the Asteron Centre back up to the New Building Standard code.

In the interim, all CAA and AvSec staff based at the Asteron Centre worked from temporary workspaces in Wellington’s CBD while the seismic work was underway.

The previous fit out of the Asteron Centre on levels 14 and 15 had reached the end of its lifespan. As a result, and given the substantial seismic upgrades, a completely new fit out was needed to support the Authority’s core regulatory safety and security activities. As part of the fit-out, much of the furniture from the temporary offices was reused, and original meeting rooms and other fixtures were kept where practical (e.g., the kitchen etc).

The Asteron Centre is located at 55 Featherston Street, Pipitea, Wellington 6011.
